Dogs off Lead Areas

Monash City Council has dog controls that give protection to residents from dog attack while also providing specially selected areas where dogs can be exercised.

Council has a number of environmentally sensitive parks where native wildlife is increasingly returning. Dogs off leads and not under effective control can kill native wildlife or cause them severe stress.

Please be mindful of wildlife even when walking your dog on a lead. Cats are prohibited from entering environmentally sensitive parks.

Council's controls require dogs to be on leads (no longer than 1.5 metres) in all public places at all times except in the following 30 designated 'off lead' areas in the municipality.

Owners obligations in 'off-lead' reserves

When a dog is being exercised off a lead in an 'off lead' reserve the owner must:

• remain in effective voice or hand management of the dog so you can promptly place the dog on a lead, if that becomes necessary
• carry a lead no longer than 1.5m which can bring the dog under effective control if the dog threatens any person or animal
• not allow the dog to worry or threaten any person or animal
• always keep the dog in sight
• carry a bag, receptacle or other means of picking up, and removing from the public place, any of the dog's faeces bring the dog under control if it is or is likely to be within twenty metres of
  - an organised sporting or practice event that is underway
  - an occupied children's playground
  - an organised public meeting
  - an occupied permanent barbecue or picnic area
