Positive Ageing

What is Positive Ageing?

The ageing of the Australian population presents both a major challenge and significant opportunities in relation to the living standards, health, welfare and quality of life of older people.

The traditional notion of older age as a period of declining physical and mental capacity is being replaced by the alternative view that older age can be healthy, active, productive and positive.

The 10 Rules of Positive Ageing
  • Remain physically active and healthy
  • Participate fully in a social life
  • Work for the love of it
  • Eat what you want in moderation
  • Rest well
  • Never stop learning and teaching
  • Practice safety
  • Smile and laugh often
  • Do what you like best
  • Remain positive in all you do
"The Ageing demographic shift towards an older population is a sign of hope, not a cause for alarm"
(Dr Don Edgar, Ageing, Everybody’s Future, 1991).
Population Ageing in Victoria?
Victoria's seniors are living longer and healthier lives:
  • Victorian men, aged 60 in the year 2001, can expect to live an additional 21 years, with 17 of these years being in good health.
  • Victorian women, aged 60 in the year 2001, can expect to enjoy another 25 years, with 20 of these years being in good health.
A small proportion of seniors live in residential age care facilities:
  • Older people consistanly express a preference for living in the community whether with their adult children or on their own.
  • Less than 5% of seniors reside in institutional care.
  • Home and Community Care (HACC) services are provided to 17% of Victoria's seniors
