Older Persons Reference Group - Newsletter
September - November 2008Seniors Speak Up!!
On Friday 13th June members of the State Government Ministerial Advisory Council of Senior Victorians came to the City of Monash to get our opinion on how the State Government can improve and build on its services to our older residents.
The session was lead by the Chair of the Advisory Council, Merle Mitchell, and was also attended by several other members of the Council – including our local representative Cliff Picton. The City of Monash Older Persons Reference Group was represented at this consultation by five members.
The meeting was very lively and participants were given the opportunity to express their views on issues such as health services, housing and accommodation, older disabled peoples needs, isolation and depression, older people still in the workforce, the increasing number of grandparents caring for children.
Whilst some of the issues raised were matters that impacted on federal government funding, some of the suggestions that are being taken forward to the State Government included the revisiting of concessions for motor vehicle registration, taxi rebates, safer public transport.
Up to twelve consultations have been scheduled throughout the state and these will be completed by the end of June. It is then envisaged that a full report will be presented to government by mid August.
