2014 Sustainable Cities Awards
Monash won the Community Government Partnership Award of the Sustainable Cities Awards with our Creating Clayton's Laneways project.
Sustainability Victoria and Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria hosted the Sustainable Cities Awards on 1 August 2014.
The Creating Clayton's Laneways project involved the redevelopment of the Thomas Street laneway in Clayton. Design features to reduce crime, as well as contribute to the actual and perceived safety of the area, were key objectives.
The number of pedestrians in the area has increased significantly since the redevelopment with people reporting that they feel safer.
Council also received several Highly Commended Awards including the:
- Environmental Sustainability Award - Monash Permaculture Garden
- Resource Recovery and Waste Management Award - Monash Waste Transfer Station, Sustainable Waste Recovery for a Better Future.
Council was also a finalist in seven categories in addition to the overall Sustainable Cities Award.
