Strategy 2016 - 2026

In March 2016, Council adopted a 10-year Environmental Sustainability Strategy, which commits us to many actions including continued reduction of Council's greenhouse gas emissions.

Strategy Summary (pdf, 1MB)

Other actions from this strategy include:

  • Maintaining and improving the municipality's tree canopy cover and ecological health
  • Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and Council's use of fresh water
  • Educating (and encouraging) Council staff and our community to understand environmental sustainability concepts and to implement solutions.

Several feasibility studies will need to be undertaken to provide the necessary data and information to develop challenging, yet achievable, specific targets for these actions.

The strategy supersedes Monash's Environmental Sustainability Road Map , a four year plan which ended last year. One of that plan's major goals was to reduce Council's greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020. This goal is expected to be achieved, with a 3% reduction having been reached (by 30 June 2015) and an 18% reduction expected to flow from the installation of energy efficient globes in 8,000 street lights in 2015.
