Update

Weather has impacted on the ongoing works in Oakleigh to improve drainage and the streetscape.

The changed timetable for the works is:

  • Atherton Road (between Drummond Street and Atkinson/Hanover Streets). These works will now take place from Sunday 23 June to Friday 28 June from 8pm until 6am
  • Haughton Road/Johnson Street intersection. Asphalt works planned for this road have been rescheduled overnight on Sunday 16 June to Monday 17 June from 10.15pm until 5.30am, weather permitting. If the works are unable to proceed due to inclement weather, the asphalting has also been programed overnight on Monday 17 June or Tuesday 18 June.
  • Drainage installation works along Atherton Road, Oakleigh between Eaton Mall and Station Street, have been underway and have required the temporary closure of Station Street.  Station Street will be closed to traffic from 6.30am to 5.30pm with works expected to be completed by Friday 7 June.

Night Closures (June 2019)

Due to the wet weather the proposed night works in Atherton Road, requiring the closure of the road between Atkinson and Drummond/Hanover Streets have been postponed. Works will now occur on Sunday 23 June to Friday 28 June from 8pm until 6am.

This closure is to allow for the construction of underground drainage in Atherton Road at the Eaton Mall intersection, associated asphalt and concrete works and tree planting.

The tree planting is to replace the trees that had to be removed earlier this year after Council found significant damage to infrastructure from invasive roots.

Council is replacing these trees with maturing species of the Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) to preserve the green space valued by the Oakleigh Community. The Norway Maple is useful in urban areas as a street tree due to its dense growth habit, heat tolerance and its richly coloured scorch resistant summer foliage.

Understory vegetation (plants that grow under the canopy trees) will be planted in July.

Detours will be in place to guide traffic and pedestrians around the road closure while these works area underway.

The Haughton Road/Johnson Street, Oakleigh intersection will be closed overnight on Sunday 16 June to Monday 17 June from 10.15pm until 5.30am, weather permitting, for asphalt works.

.If the works are unable to proceed due to inclement weather, the asphalting has been programed overnight on Monday 17 June or Tuesday 18 June (weather permitting) so that final asphalt works can be carried out as part of pedestrian improvements.

Night Works 3-8 March 2019

The intersection of Atherton Road, Atkinson Street and Hanover Street will be closed overnight from Sunday 3 March 2019 until Friday 8 March 2019, from 8pm-6am.

This is to allow for the construction of underground drainage across the intersection and associated asphalt and concrete works.

Detours will be in place to guide traffic around the closure.

Update

As part of the road reconstruction works on Atherton Road, Council is accessing the health of the trees on the road and whether there are invasive roots.

Council has identified 13 trees on Atherton Rd between Warrigal Rd and Atkinson St that require removal due to their invasive roots.

It was Council’s intention to retain the majority of the trees but due to the damage being caused by their complex root system, this is not possible.

A further assessment on another six trees will take place once the footpath is removed. These trees may also require removal depending on their root system.

Council will be replacing any trees with an advanced species to preserve the green space valued by the Oakleigh Community.

We will also be holding a community meeting on Wednesday, 6 February 2019 from 7pm at the Oakleigh Service Centre to talk through the project with the community and discuss any concerns.
