The reconstruction works to upgrade Atherton Road between Warrigal Road and Clyde Street, Oakleigh are planned to start on the week beginning Monday 17 September (weather permitting).
Council has allocated more than $5.8 million to improve the streetscape along this section of Atherton Road following feedback from the community about enhancing this area of the Oakleigh Activity Centre. These works build on the success of the revitalisation of Eaton Mall, which is considered one of Melbourne’s premier dining destinations.
The project will take approximately 12 months to complete and traffic will be able to continue to use the street although there may be some delays. Traffic management and signage will be in place to guide pedestrians and motorists through the various work zones.
The works will be carried out in various stages with two dedicated work crews – one crew commencing near the Warrigal Road end of Atherton Road and the other crew working from the Hanover Street intersection towards Clyde Street. Updates will be provided as the works progress.
There will be some impact on parking so we can deliver this long-awaited project. During the course of the works the contractor will require areas for storage of equipment and materials and existing car parks at 3 Palmerston Grove (western car park) and part of a carpark off Oxford Street will be closed and used for storage purposes.
The multi-deck car park between Atkinson Street and Palmerston Grove offers plenty of alternative parking while these works are carried out.
The reconstruction works include:
- New widened footpaths with granite paving and a new asphalt road surface
- New street lighting
- Improved stormwater drainage with water sensitive urban design elements to minimize and manage street tree root problems
- Indented and modified parking bays that will create larger areas for the protection of the remaining street trees and allow them more space in which to grow.
