Australia Day 2021

Welcoming our newest citizens and recognising the spirit and way of life of our nation is at the heart of Monash Council’s Australia Day activities on Tuesday 26 January.

The day’s events start at 10am with a citizenship ceremony at the Civic Centre, Glen Waverley where 24 Monash residents will become Australian citizens. The ceremony will be livestreamed for people at home to watch.

A program of FREE cultural activities will be available from 11am on Council’s Australia Day webpage and YouTube Channel, including:

  • A Welcome to Country from Kellie Hunter and Uncle Ian Goolagong
  • A message from our Mayor, Cr Brian Little
  • A special performance for children from The Beanies
  • A presentation by the grandson of the Vegemite creator about the birth of this iconic product (bookings essential to receive a YouTube link to view)
  • Performance by Melbourne’s multicultural musical outfit Sol Nation and Australia’s Queen of soul/funk Kylie Auldist
  • Songs and a reading of Noni the Pony Rescues a Joey by Alison Lester (bookings essential to receive a YouTube link to view).

There’s also free online workshops from 24-27 January themed “Kindness to Country” about understanding and caring for the Country around us (bookings essential).

“Australia Day in Monash is about recognising all that is great about living in our community. We also understand the different positions held regarding Australia Day and encourage everyone to reflect on the significance of this day to our indigenous community members,” Cr Little said.

“More than ever, given the devastating year we experienced in 2020 with bushfires, floods and then the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to join together to acknowledge the resilience and determination that is part of our national character.”
