Donations of masks, coats, food, and clothing have been distributed across Monash as the community rallies to support those in need.
The National Liaison Council of Chinese Australians has donated a number of oxygen concentrator devices (used by people who experience breathing difficulties and require additional help and support to maintain oxygen levels) and a large supply of face masks to Council, and these will be distributed to local aged care facilities.
Glen Waverley resident Cathy Liu generously donated 10,000 masks that have been provided to Monash Health and local community groups for their use.
Parcels of food have been delivered to families and food vouchers provided through support networks across Monash.
Examples of some local efforts include:
- a number of winter coats donated by the Wheelers Hill Rotary Club which have been distributed to those people experiencing homelessness. Council is working with several people experiencing homelessness to find them accommodation and also providing them with warm clothing and provisions is a priority
- The Church of Christ supplying cooked meals to Holmesglen Institute to help International Students.
Mayor Stuart James said it was heartwarming to see the outpouring of donations to help those struggling as a result of COVID-19.
“During this very difficult time we have really seen the best of people. Many have stepped forward to donate to Council and to our other wonderful support organisations in Monash and we are grateful for their generosity,” Cr James said.
“Our teams have been out providing deliveries to those vulnerable members of our community, including our elderly and those sleeping rough, to assist them to access what they need and to just be a reassuring touch-point during this period of isolation.
“There has also been outstanding support for community members from many organisations across Monash who have always been there for our residents, but have gone above and beyond to care for those in need,” he said.
“As we begin the recovery process, it’s important we hear from you about the type of support which is most helpful. We all need to work together in this recovery, and you know your needs better than anyone else. Please get in touch, tell us about your experience and what you need most to help us with our ongoing response efforts so we can help everyone in the community get the assistance they need.”
Please note: Council is not accepting drop-offs of items. If you have donations, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 9518 3555 and ask for our Community Response Team who can assist with coordination of donations and also hear any feedback you want to provide about support needed in the community.
