There were huge celebrations at Mount Waverley Library for local resident Stan Nelson for his 101st birthday.

Stan, who has lived in Mount Waverley since 1977 was at the library for the Home Library Service’s monthly morning tea on 13 November and he was surprised with a “happy birthday” song from families attending the storytime session.

Children, including Ethan, 4 and Mia, 3 (pictured with Stan) applauded loudly for his incredible birthday milestone.

A lifelong Richmond Football Club supporter, Stan said “Go Tigers!” after he’d blown out his birthday cake candles. He has been a patron of the library for many years and said he enjoyed getting audio books delivered to his home through the library service.

Also at the morning tea was Mary Wetton, 95 who has lived in Burwood for 32 years and uses the Monash Home Library Service. Another member Madelon Harland, 91 moved to Mount Waverley in 1954 and said the library “is a wonderful thing” as she remembers the time when there was no library service in the area.

Monash Public Library Service provides a free monthly delivery of books, magazines, DVDs, audio books and more to people in the community who find it hard to visit the library branches. The service also has a bus that will pick up people once a month to visit Glen Waverley or Mount Waverley libraries and enjoy morning tea and a chance to browse the collections.
