We are putting a story together which will air tonight on Nine’s A Current Affair about council rates. We have interviewed a small business owner in Glen Waverley who is concerned about the fact that his council rates have risen by 70 per cent since last year.

We are hoping to get a response in writing to explain the reasons behind the sharp rise in rates and how council determines these rises.

The 2017/18 rates for 24 Kingsway, Glen Waverley have increased by 49% over 2017/18 rates.

This is mainly due to an increase in the valuation of the property by 70%. 

Glen Waverley is a highly sought after market for business, particularly the popular shopping strip of Kingsway.

The valuation at this property has been assessed based on comparable sales evidence within the Kingsway precinct over the last two years.

The property value for rating purposes is at a valuation date of 1 January 2018 (as required by Valuation of Lands Act). 

Council’s rate increase for 2018/19 is an average of 2.25% as required under the Fair Go Rates System under a rate cap set by the State Government. 

For 2018/19 the rates notice also includes additional bin charges for this property.

The bin charges were previously sent out on a separate invoice, but for the first time have now been included on the rates notice.
