Central Car Park Media Response

Questions and responses

I have a media enquiry regarding the Central Carpark on Springvale Rd in Glen Waverley.

Has the council spent 1.2 million of ratepayer funds to assess this carpark?

Council has spent approximately $640,000 on Central Car Park. There has been other work in the Glen Waverley Activity Centre, which includes structure, transport and master plans. As these plans are not specific to Central Car Park they have not been included in the Central Car Park project costs.

How long has the assessment been taking place? And, what are the current plans for this carpark?

A master plan of the Glen Waverley activity centre was conducted in 2013 and has since been used to help develop a structure plan and sustainable transport plan for this area, including the Central Car Park site. The expression of interest (EOI) process on the Central Car Park site commenced in 2015.

For a number of years, Council has been working with and consulting the community on an improved outcome for the Central Car Park site.  We are looking at options for the site involving creating a town square, increasing the available car parking below the site and a significant upgrade to the Glen Waverley library. We are committed to further consultation with the community to ensure we get the best possible result for the future of Glen Waverley.

Council is currently considering responses from the EOI and request for proposal (RFP) processes for the possible redevelopment of the Central Car Park.  If there is a preferred proposal, Council will consult with the community before any decisions on the future of the site are made.

Re. Community Consultation

There has been extensive community consultation on the Central Car Park site including writing to every resident and ratepayer in Glen Waverley inviting their input into what they would like included in a potential new community precinct. People have had the opportunity to have their say in the form of community information sessions, an online survey and printed and online communications.

This Report details the community consultation undertaken:  Report to Council 29 March 2016  (pdf, 388KB)
