Media Response Greek Wildfires Donation

Questions & Responses

Can I have the urgent business motion for the $1000 donation towards the fires in Greece, what it is going towards and a couple of comments from Paul about why it is important to do so?

The terrible wildfires in Greece are heartbreaking, and in Victoria we know how devastating bushfires can be.

Monash is a multicultural community and our Greek community in Monash is a large one, and we support our community in times like these.

This is a human issue and we hope that our donation of $1000 to the Hellenic Red Cross will help the people affected by the wildfires in Greece.

This tragedy could have been in any corner of the world and it’s the right thing to do to support communities in need.

In the past Council has donated money to the Red Cross after the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami ($13,000) and $50,000 to the Municipal Association of Victoria Local Government Bushfire Recovery Fund in the wake of the Black Saturday Bushfires in 2009.

The motion and decision can be found (item 8) at https://www.monash.vic.gov.au/files/assets/public/about-us/council/council-meetings/minutes-decisions/31-july-2018-council-meeting-decisions.pdf
