Oakleigh Interchange Media Response

Questions and Responses

A few questions re the interchange:

What is council trying to do with the Oakleigh transport interchange?

We want to create an attractive, safe pedestrian environment around a reinvigorated public transport hub; one that  fits in with the unique character of the Oakleigh Village. We also want to improve the connections between the bus interchange and train station, to give a better experience for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst making sure the traffic, particularly  buses, flows better. flow better, especially for the buses.

What does council need to progress the project?

We are looking for a commitment as part of the upcoming election campaign from all the major parties to fund this great initiative for Oakleigh.

Why is it important?

Anyone who is out and about in Oakleigh knows it is a very busy area and can be quite chaotic with the flow of traffic moving around the interchange, or the lack of flow, and the challenges of meeting the needs of both vehicles and pedestrians. We want to make the experience of using the transport interchange and coming to Oakleigh better for all users and create more enjoyable public spaces.

Oakleigh is a fantastic place and draws visitors from all over Melbourne to shop and dine, especially in Eaton Mall. This is an exciting time for the area.

What is the process from here?

We are currently asking the community, including transport users and Oakleigh traders to have their say on our proposal. We’d like to hear from as many people as possible and we’ve had staff at the train station on several mornings talking to people about our plans. We have also written to the major political parties and their candidates in the 2018 Victorian State Election to advise them of our proposal and seek their funding commitment towards this project.
