Shane McCluskey, who was first elected to Council for the Mulgrave Ward in 2016, has been elected Monash's Mayor for the next 12 months.

He previously served as Deputy Mayor in 2017/18.

Mount Waverley Ward Councillor Brian Little has been elected Deputy Mayor.

Cr McCluskey said participation and gender equity in sport, community wellbeing and opportunities for continuing to advocate for a youth mental health service in Monash, would form part of his focus for this mayoral year.

"What inspires me to be involved in Local Government is being able to help people feel included and engaged in our community whether that’s through participation in sport or cultural and learning activities, or any way they see fit. It’s important to provide ways for people to enjoy themselves and feel a part of their communities."

"Our commitment to the lifetime wellbeing of Monash residents is outlined in A Healthy and Resilient Monash: Integrated Plan 2017-2021 and I am passionate about programs we provide, like Active Monash, that are a great way to involve the whole community in a variety of activities.

“Something I am keen to promote is the increased participation of women and girls in sport and I will work towards ensuring that Council facilities and user groups provide opportunities where gender equity in sport, recreation and life is normalised.”

Cr McCluskey said over the next 12 months “and beyond” he would work to ensure that Monash remained a leader in the gender equity and equal opportunity space, not just in sport.
