Statement - Vandalism at Clayton Road shopping precinct

 09 September 2020

Civic Centre Spring

Statement from Mayor Stuart James

Council is extremely disappointed at the deliberate vandalism of several businesses in Clayton on Monday evening 7 September 2020. We are supporting Victoria Police in their investigation and also supporting our Clayton businesses who are understandably distressed and angry about being targeted in this way.

Businesses are already under great pressure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These appalling actions only add to that pressure.

There was also a letter posted to the window of a business in Clayton Road that was racist in its content. Whilst Victoria Police investigations are continuing, this letter appears to be unrelated to the vandalism of the shops and is an isolated incident, but is also of great concern to Council.

Monash is a proud multicultural community and we strongly denounce racism targeted at any of our community members.

This is a tough period for all of us but it is important that we stay united and get through this together.
