Stink bug found in Clayton

 15 January 2019

shield bug or stink bug

The pest bug, brown marmorated stink bug, has been recently found in Clayton.

The Clayton sighting is the first time the pest has been found in Victoria. It has since also been found in Dandenong South.

The stink bugs are 12 to 17mm long, have a distinctive brown ‘shield’ shape and variable body colour.

They are known as stink bugs because the let off an odour similar to rotting onions when disturbed or crushed.

Agriculture Victoria staff are conducting targeted surveillance around Clayton, Dandenong South and surrounding suburbs to search for this nuisance pest, with the aim of preventing further spread as it can have a significant impact on fruit and vegetable produce.

Anyone who finds this pest should catch it so it can be properly identified.
