Food Premises

food premises

Council's Environmental Health Officers conduct annual food safety inspections of food businesses to ensure proper food safety measures are being carried out.

Everybody who prepares, and/ or stores food for sale is required under the Food Act 1984 to register their business with Council or notify Council of their operation.

If you wish to renew your Registration for your Business, you can do it Online or by visiting Monash Civic Centre or Oakleigh Service Centre.

The Food Act 1984 defines four different Classes of food premises, each with different registration or notification requirements.

To find out which Class your new business falls into, refer to the Classification of Food Businesses section and/or contact Council’s Public Health Unit on 9518 3555.

    Home Occupation

Many people operate their own small business from their residential home. Such a use is called Home Occupation. The Monash Planning Scheme allows a person to use their residential home for home occupation provided certain specific requirements are fully satisfied.  Please see the following guidelines for details: Home Occupation .

Please note, if you wish to prepare and/or serve food or engage in beauty therapy practices, the Public Health Act 2009 requires you to receive registration and be compliant with regulations.
