Oakleigh Recreation Centre expansion

Waverley Gymnastics
Oakeligh Recreation Centre - game

Up to $20 million will be spent upgrading and expanding Oakleigh Recreation Centre so it can host a wider range of sports, including gymnastics.

All three levels of government are contributing funds towards the expansion, which will include a purpose-built gymnastics facility. With more than 500 people on its waiting list, Waverley Gymnastics has outgrown its Mount Waverley facility and will make a new home at Oakleigh.

The State and Federal Governments will contribute $5.1 million combined towards the estimated $18-$20 million costs, while Waverley Gymnastics will contribute $1 million. Council will invest between $11.9 million -$13.9 million.

The benefits of the combined project include:

  • an upgrade of the 40 year old indoor courts at the Oakleigh Recreation Centre and adding a 5th court;
  • a 50% increase in the floor space for the Waverley Gymnastics Centre;
  • relief for residents of Mount Waverley's Dorrington Drive and surrounds, who face parking and traffic impacts due to Waverley Gymnastics being located there; and
  • about $2.5M in savings for Council and the Monash community, compared with the costs of undertaking the stadium upgrade and the gymnastics centre expansion separately.

Construction is expected to begin later this year, with the expanded facility to open in late 2018.

Meanwhile, Council has resolved that the Dorrington Drive facility currently used by Waverley Gymnastics will be maintained for community use and that any future use of the site must be less intrusive than the current use. Council will consult with local residents about future community-use options for the site.
