From 30 April to 3 May 2021, eight Eastern Melbourne municipalities will be participating in the City Nature Challenge - a worldwide effort to observe and identify plants and wildlife in cities across the world, in an effort to better protect them.

Over these four days, residents will document the natural wildlife that lives and grows in our corner of the world. It's an opportunity to contribute to science and connect with nature.

The Cities of Boroondara, Greater Dandenong, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Monash, Stonnington and Whitehorse are together representing eastern Melbourne on the global City Nature Challenge stage.

To get involved, download the free iNaturalist app, look out for wild plants and animals to photograph between 30 April and 3 May and upload them to the app. You can do this on your own or you can join us at one of our free events below.

For more information on the challenge, please visit City Nature Challenge

iNaturalist Training

To prepare for the challenge, the eastern region Councils are hosting iNaturalist training sessions. iNaturalist is a platform that you can use to record your observations of insects and wildlife, learn from others and be a part of a huge citizen science project. By contributing information in this way, we can help researchers across the globe track changes in biodiversity and add value to our observations.

To get us started we've invited ecologist Dr Luis Mata to provide us with an introduction to the platform and answer our questions at the below training session:

All people who register will be provided with a link to the recording of this webinar.

You can also catch up on the session that occured on Tuesday 23 March with the below video:
