International Women's Day celebration: Afghan women's film, 'I Was Worth 50 Sheep'.

07 March 2018 | 07:00PM to 09:00PM

This film documents a brave girl, Sabere, and her struggle for life in Afghanistan. Through the prism of her family, this heart-rending and thought-provoking film vividly depicts the tragedy that is Afghanistan. When Sabere was just ten years old she was sold to a man forty years her senior and after seven years of confinement and abuse, she escaped to find temporary refuge in a women's sanctuary, there facing difficult decisions.

The film is a simple and moving story of one family's struggle to survive and shows the great difficulties that women encounter searching for human dignity and freedom whilst being caught between ancient traditions and a modern world.

Following the film, a discussion will be led by Gula Bezhan from the Afghan Women's Organisation Victoria.

A light supper will be provided.

All are welcome to join us!
