NAIDOC Week 2019

Come along to FREE events in Monash as part of National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week (7-14 July).

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week Opening & Flag Raising Ceremony 

City of Monash is celebrating NAIDOC Week with a special opening event. 

The program will include: 

  • Welcome to Country by a Wurundjeri Elder
  • Aboriginal Flag Raising Ceremony
  • A traditional didjeridoo performance
  • Free bush tucker BBQ by Ashwood Lions Club
  • Monday 8 July, 12.30pm - 2pm

Art Workshops

As part of this year’s NAIDOC Week activities, Indigenous artist Heather Kennedy and local artist Naomi Bishop will hold a series of free art workshops for children. Come along and listen to Indigenous stories and join in the creation of an artwork. Some artworks will be added to an exhibition at The Track Gallery.

A NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition

An exhibition by Indigenous artist Heather Kennedy and local artist Naomi Bishop, and including artworks created in collaboration with the students of Parkhill Primary School.

Indigenous themed storytime

Monash Public Library Service will present a series of Indigenous themed storytimes across the six library branches. Children up to 5 years will enjoy stories and a craft activity.

Winter Concert: Kutcha Edwards

Kutcha Edwards is one of Australia’s most respected and inspiring Aboriginal singer/songwriters.

‘Music is not what I do, it is who I am. My songs may be contemporary but they are over 40,000 years old. They come through me from my ancestors and my people and they tell our stories’.

Movie screening: Bitter Springs

A special opportunity to watch this classic 1950 black and white Australian film. In the early 1900s, Wally King travels 600 miles to outback South Australia with his family to occupy land he has leased from the government. Despite warnings from a local trooper, the bigoted King clashes with an Aboriginal tribe who depend on water located on what has become the family’s property.
