Monash Council undertakes a FREE annual hard waste collection each financial year, usually occurring between August and September.
From 1 July 2018 Monash residents can book an additional hard waste collection that they pay for at the time of booking. This hard waste is ‘at-call’, which means people can book for a week that suits them.
Council recognises that these are difficult and challenging times and we are providing support to our community in a number of ways.
From today, 8 April 2020, we have made a temporary change to our At Call Hard Waste Service to help you during the Coronavirus /COVID-19 crisis.
The cost of this service is now $110 (reduced from $143) for residents and $90 (reduced from $123) for pensioners.
These items must not exceed two cubic metres (2m3) which is equal, for example, to 2m long by 1m deep by 1m high.
How to find the volume of your hard waste stack:
- Measure the three dimensions in metres
- Multiply these three dimensions, for example: 2m x 1m x 1m = 2m3 (volume)
- The volume should be 2m3 or less

The fee for the service has been temporarily set to $110 with a discount for pensioners who have a Centrelink or Department of Veterans Affairs card. The cost for this discounted service is $90 including GST. The change to this service was undertaken to support the community during the Coronavirus/ COVID-19 pandemic.
You will need to provide your Centrelink Pension or Department of Veterans' Affairs card number at the time of booking to qualify for the pensioner discount.
Council is adding this additional hard waste collection after surveying more than 105,700 ratepayers and residents in November 2017 about the future of our hard waste collection.
More than 30,900 residents responded, opting for one per year at-call user pays hard waste collection in addition to the free service provided by Council.
Booking the additional hard waste collection
To book your collection you can:
- Book online
- Phone Council on 9518 3555 during business hours
- Pick up a form at our Council offices at the Monash Civic Centre (293 Springvale Rd, Glen Waverley) or the Oakleigh Service Centre (3 Atherton Road, Oakleigh) during business hours.
When the hard waste is collected
Wednesdays and Thursdays are the designated collection days for this additional hard waste service.
- If you book and pay before 4pm on a Monday your hard waste will be picked up on the Wednesday or Thursday of the same week.
- If you book and pay after 4pm on a Monday your hard waste will be picked up on the following Wednesday or Thursday.
What can I put in my hard waste?
The items you can put out for this additional at-call hard waste service are the same as the annual free hard waste collection.
Please separate your material into three stacks – hard rubbish, green waste and metal to make it easier for collection.
Keep it neat and put it out only a few days before your booked collection date.
- Items put out for collection must be able to be lifted by two people and weigh less than 50kg
- These items must not exceed two cubic metres (2m3) which is equal, for example, to 2m long by 1m deep by 1m high
- Please do not park your car in front of the nature strip on the Wednesday and Thursday of your booked collection week.
Monash residents are proud of their community and keeping streets tidy is important so please only put your hard waste out a few days before your collection.

We know that residents support sustainability and a proportion of hard waste collected by Council is reused and recycled wherever possible.
How do I cancel?
If you need to cancel your collection you must call by 2pm on the Tuesday of the week your collection is booked.

I forgot about my service and didn’t put out my hard waste. Can I reschedule?
Phone Council’s Waste Services Administration team on 9518 3769 to reschedule your collection.
What happens if I’ve put something out that can’t be collected?
If there’s an item in your collection that can’t be accepted you will receive a letter from Council and you must remove them from the nature strip within 24 hours.
Sustainability Victoria holds a free household chemical drop-off service each month at different locations across Victoria. This is where you can get rid of all old chemicals and other dangerous substances that can’t be put out on your hard waste.

How do I know if I’ve put out too much on my hard waste?
For this additional at-call hard waste collection service you are allowed 2 cubic metres (2m3).
If you have put out too much hard waste you will receive a notice from Council. Any leftover items will need to be disposed of or stored. For more info phone Council’s Waste Services Administration team on 9518 3769.
I will be booking with a pensioner discount. What information do you need?
You will need to provide your Centrelink Pension or Department of Veteran Affairs card number at the time of booking to qualify for the pensioner discount.
How many mattresses can I dispose of?
Your collection must fit within the 2 cubic metre size (2m3). If you have more mattresses than fits within this size you can dispose of them at Council’s Waste Transfer Station in Notting Hill for a cost of $29.70 per item (price applicable from 1 July 2019).
