Media response - Mayfield Reserve, Mount Waverley

Published on 06 May 2025

Enquiry from The Age (paraphrased)

Following the fire on the weekend at Mayfield Reserve:

  • Where are the Wanderers being relocated to?
  • Is the council concerned about the three incidents, in particular now that there have been two fires on council buildings, used by adults and children for sport?
  • Do you have an estimate on repair and rebuild costs the council is facing for the fires in April and May? Is insurance covering the bill?
  • Are additional security measures going to be added to other grounds?

Response

Losing two facilities for local sporting clubs in a matter of weeks is incredibly disappointing and concerning. We are in regular contact with Victoria Police and have put additional security in place at other sporting facilities.

Our staff are working with clubs to find alternative locations for upcoming matches, and the Waverley Wanderers will play their next few homes games at Gardiners Reserve.

At this stage, we anticipate the cost for each pavilion to be between $3 and $4m and we await information from our insurers.
