Monash has local laws that are in place to protect the amenity of Monash and the safety of everyone in it. These local laws cover many aspects of daily life such as keeping footpaths and walkways clear of vegetation, sharing available parking fairly, reducing risks and ensuring the proper procedures are followed in Council meetings and elections.

Under the new Local Government Act 2020, a council is now required to have Governance Rules to govern the conduct of Council meetings and meetings of any delegated committee the Council may establish.
Local Law No 2 - Administrative Procedures (Use of the Common Seal) will cease to operate on 26 April 2026.From 26 April 2026, the use of Council’s Common Seal will be governed by the Use of Common Seal Policy, adopted by Council on 27 January 2026.

Clause 114 of Council’s Local Law No 3 provides that a person must not consume any alcohol or be in possession of an unsealed container of alcohol in any public place that is declared by Council to be a prohibited area.
