Homelessness in Monash — support and assistance

Homelessness, insecure housing and rough sleeping are complex issues that increasingly impact community members across Monash.

Our teams work closely with specialist services, local support organisations and Victoria Police to provide coordinated and compassionate support to people in need.

Homelessness can happen to anyone

Homelessness is not a choice. A wide range of personal, social and economic factors can lead individuals or families to experience homelessness or become at risk.

A shortage of social housing, rising private rental costs and lack of income support mean many people are struggling to secure an affordable, stable place to live.

Across Victoria, the most common reasons people seek housing and homelessness assistance include financial pressures, family and domestic violence, and the ongoing housing crisis.

It's important to note that Council does not have legal powers to move people on. People experiencing homelessness have the same rights as all community members to use public spaces, and they will be treated with dignity and respect.

Council's role

Our approach involves outreach, advocacy and practical support to connect people sleeping rough with the services they need. We work directly with individuals to provide:

  • Information and supported referrals to both housing and material aid services.
  • Access to a shower.
  • Practical items such as jackets and sleeping bags.

Monash Council is proud to be a member of the Regional Local Government Homelessness and Social Housing Charter group alongside 12 other councils that represents over 2 million residents across Melbourne's east and south-east. Together, we advocate for increased social housing and long-term solutions to homelessness.
