Monash Achieves Net Zero

We are proud to have achieved our net zero 2025 target and completed delivery of our Zero Net Carbon Action Plan 2020-2025.

This milestone reflects our focused action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in low-cost renewable energy sources.

Building on these achievements, Council endorsed a new Climate Resilience Plan 2026–2030 at its 26 May 2026 meeting (Item 7.4.1)

The plan outlines how we will work with our community to respond to the impacts of a changing climate, future-proof our places and spaces, and continue to reduce emissions.

Purchasing 100% Renewable Energy

Victorian Energy Collaboration is the largest emissions reduction project ever undertaken by the local government sector in Australia.

EV charging bays and Council's vehicle fleet transition

Monash offers 6 public EV charging bays with up to 22kW capacity. Also, we are transitioning our vehicle fleet to meet required standards.

LED Street Light Upgrade

In 2018 public lighting accounted for 17.6% of Council’s emissions.
We have now upgraded more than 2,500 main streetlights to energy-efficient LEDs.

Environmentally Sustainable Design

Monash’s Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) Policy guides the design and development of Council buildings and infrastructure to meet high environmental standards.

Solar for Council Buildings

Council has installed almost 600kW of solar capacity on key Council buildings. The initiative will harness solar energy as a clean and renewable source of electricity.

Improving Council Building Efficiency

With over 300 community buildings, Monash is improving energy performance through upgrades and renewals.

Sustainable procurement

Monash is strengthening procurement practices to prioritise sustainable procurement.

Carbon Offsets

The carbon offsets were procured to ensure the target of net zero emissions by 2025 was achieved.
