Xani: Live at The Count's

xani

It’s rare to hear a musician who plays as gloriously and with as much passion as Xani. – Clare Bowditch

Best known for touring the festival circuit throughout Australia with her violin-and-drums duo The Twoks, Xani Kolac is a celebrated violinist, artist, and intrepid songwriter.

Principally an electric violin player, she is also an improviser, collaborator, singer, songwriter who approaches music-making from so many levels the outcome is something distinct, venturing into the spaces between pop, jazz, electronic and chamber.

A musician of the highest regard, Kolac’s live performance is unforgettable. With electronic effect pedals and live looping charging her highly improvised live sets. Kolac’s repertoire is coloured by the ferocity of her instrumental output which is shaded by a deep creativity, her earnest voice, and pure joy.

Kolac has performed and collaborated alongside Australian music pioneers Tim Rogers, Jens Lekman, Kate Ceberano, Clare Bowditch, and taken stage at Hamer Hall, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, SBS’s RocKwiz, and performed in multi-award-winning productions Come From Away and Girl From the North Country while releasing three original self-produced records. Most recently, Kolac was the musical director and composer for Virginia Gay’s highly-acclaimed MTC production of Cyrano.

Opening for Xani will be Poet Street

Poet Street is a fresh, all-female 7-piece jazz ensemble, with almost all members currently studying at Sir Zelman Cohen School of Music. They play a mix of standards and original material written by band members in a range of jazz styles. Members of Poet Street recently performed with dynamic Chilean saxophonist Melissa Aldana as part of a ‘Masters and Apprentices’ series during Melbourne International Jazz Festival. After their debut performance at the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival in December 2020, they were honoured to receive a recording prize with Rolling Stock Recording Rooms, and released their debut album in 2022.
