Monash Council is partnering with the Victorian Government to build a modern new facility at Dover Street Preschool in Oakleigh East.
The upgrade will allow the facility to provide two 33-place kindergarten rooms to meet the current and future needs of the community.
As part of the Victorian Government’s funded kindergarten reforms for three- and four-year-old children, Dover Street Preschool was identified as a facility that could be rebuilt to provide more kindergarten places. The project is funded through a partnership between the Victorian Government - Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) and Monash Council.
In addition to the two kindergarten rooms, the new kindergarten will include staff working spaces and an outdoor learning environment constructed on the northern side of the site to make better use of the sloping block and the existing trees.
The project includes the demolition of the current building and construction of a modern, modular facility designed to meet all the needs of a high-quality kindergarten.
The new facility will be constructed offsite and transported to Dover Street, allowing much of the work to be done offsite beforehand and limiting the disruption to residents and families enrolled in the kindergarten.
Works start in mid-July 2024, with the Victorian Government taking temporary possession of the site throughout the build and managing demolition and construction works.
The new Dover Street Preschool is scheduled to be ready to welcome a fresh group of young faces in Term 1 2025.
What to expect during works
There will be truck movements by the Victorian Government’s contractors throughout the demolition and build and some street parking and access on adjacent streets may be affected. All attempts will be made to minimise impact on access through the adjacent roads.
Works will be in line with the EPA noise control guidelines and any existing building materials on site that are removed will be assessed prior to removal and managed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
During the works, Dover Street Preschool’s programs will relocate to the new Oakleigh South Child and Family Hub at 1228 North Road, Oakleigh South. The hub will operate as the base for Dover Street Preschool in Terms 3 and 4 in 2024.
