Sediment ponds and gross pollutant traps
Sediment ponds and gross pollutant traps play an important role in treating stormwater run-off from our urban catchment – capturing sediment, litter and debris that washes off our streets and filtering run-off before it enters our creeks and wetlands.
From time to time, the sediment and pollutants that accumulates in these ponds and traps requires removal before it washes further into the wetland and clogs the system.
COMPLETED WORKS
Bogong Reserve, Glen Waverley (replacement of gross pollutant trap)
When: completed late-February 2025
What: The existing gross pollutant trap was removed and replaced with a new trap. There was also secondary treatment over the existing 825mm diameter pipe, between the wetlands and existing gross pollutant trap, to improve the quality of the water discharging into the wetlands.
Gardiners Creek Reserve, Burwood (sediment removal and associated works)
When: completed May 2025
What: Accumulated sediment, litter and debris was removed from the pond at the start of the wetland system. We then re-stabilised the pond edges by installing a new clay layer and rock work, and installing new stormwater drains. All disturbed areas were reinstated with topsoil and grass seed.
Impacts: While the works had no impact on access to residential properties, the Gardiners Creek shared user path was closed between Highbury Road and the Ashwood Drive access for the duration of the works. Traffic management was put in place to guide vehicles, pedestrians and bikes past the work site to allow the safe movement of heavy machinery and trucks. A temporary ‘No Stopping’ restriction was established along Chandler Grove to facilitate the access of heavy construction vehicles and machinery to the work site. The existing 2P, 8am-7pm Mon-Fri and Permit Zone, 7pm-10pm Mon-Fri parking restrictions were changed to a ‘No Stopping’ restriction on the north side of Chandler Grove (creek side) between Montpellier Road and the Gardiners Creek access point, opposite 12 Chandler Grove.
Holmesglen Reserve, Ashwood (sediment removal and associated works)
When: completed May 2024
What: Accumulated sediment, litter and debris was removed from the pond at the start of the wetland system, stockpiled on site for drying and then removed by truck for disposal. Pond edges were re-stabilised, with some replanting to come.
