Building stronger networks for Dementia Action Week
Published on 15 September 2025
Dementia affects close to half a million Australians, and that number is growing every year. But behind every person living with dementia is a network of people doing their best to support, understand and walk alongside them.
This week is Dementia Action Week (15-21 September), and the theme, Nobody Can Do It Alone, is a powerful reminder that it takes a whole community to support someone on their dementia journey.
Monash is partnering with the Eastern Metro Regional Councils for the Dementia Action Week Roadshow. Together with Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Whitehorse, and Yarra Ranges councils, we are sharing knowledge, services, and personal stories across our region.
The roadshow kicked off on Wednesday 10 September with a booked-out seminar in Glen Waverley for people supporting loved ones with dementia. Attendees heard from the Turner Institute for Brain Health about how dementia affects the brain and what new research is happening. A carer shared their insights from supporting her partner for more than 10 years, and an occupational therapist offered practical tips to make everyday life easier.

The roadshow runs until 24 September, with events in Mulgrave, Ringwood, Lilydale, Templestowe, Bayswater and Nunawading.
Our next event in Mulgrave is a restorative sound healing session designed to give carers a chance to pause, breathe and focus on their own wellbeing.

What can support look like?
- A neighbour patiently repeating a conversation.
- A friend helping someone find the right words.
- A community group offering inclusive activities.
- A carer getting a much-needed break.
- A service provider taking the time to really listen.
