Detox Your Home is a safe and free service for Victorians to dispose of harmful and hazardous household chemicals, such as weed killers, bleach, poisons, cleaning products and more.

Why we can't throw these away

Throwing hazardous household chemicals away in a bin or down the drain is dangerous.

When you put them in the bin, chemicals can explode, catch fire, leak or mix with other substances, releasing fumes and potentially harming your family and people at sorting facilities and in waste trucks. 

Pouring them down the drain may pollute waterways and make rivers and beaches unsafe for swimming, contaminate our water supply, and harm wildlife and vegetation.

Run by Sustainability Victoria, Detox Your Home is drive-through (no walk-ins) and contactless. Bookings are essential.

Before you attend the event

  • Check your item is accepted.
  • Make sure tochemicals in their original containers or in a clearly labelled, disposable container.

  • Maximum container size: 20kg or 20L. Containers cannot be taken home with you.

2 for 1 disposal: Monash Recycling and Waste Centre

Monash Recycling and Waste Centre (RWC) is right next door! 

If you're attending this Detox Your Home event, save a trip and recycle even more items on the day.

Many items are free for Monash residents and ratepayers (must bring proof of address).

Only pack items accepted at Detox Your Home or the recycling centre, and pack them separately so they don't get mixed up. There will be 2 lines on the day as you drive in - 1 for Detox and 1 for the RWC. 

Items accepted at Detox Your Home

Items that can be dropped off include:

  • weed killers, fertiliser
  • cleaning products, bleach
  • nail polish remover
  • insect sprays, pesticides
  • pool chemicals, including liquid pool chlorine and pool salts

  • Turpentine, thinners and paint strippers.

Detox Your Home cannot accept certain items:

Asbestos is also NOT accepted at the Recycling and Waste Centre.

Detox Your Home events are staffed by expert chemists who understand how to safely manage toxic household chemicals. Chemicals are safely stored during the event then transported to a licensed processing facility at the end of each event.

Checklist

Check what you can and can't drop off at Detox Your Home.

 

Check your containers don't exceed 20 litres or 20 kilograms.

 

Check you've items are in clearly labelled and labelled and prepared accepted items properly. 

 

Put items in your empty car boot or vehicle tray.

 

On the day, clearly state you're here for Detox Your Home when you drive in. There will be a separate line for the Recycling and Waste Centre next door.

 

Stay in your car while trained staff and qualified chemists unload the items.
