Media Response Hard Rubbish
Published on 09 August 2021
Q) Has Monash seen an increase in hard-rubbish call-outs in the past 12 months?
Monash offers residents a free hard waste collection every year as well as the option to book a second at-call collection that is paid for by the resident.
The free collection enables residents to conveniently dispose of up to 4 cubic metres of hard waste.
Since July 2018 we have also offered an at-call service where people can book an additional hard waste collection that they pay for, limited to 2 cubic metres.
The demand for both services has increased over the past year.
We have this year added in an extra week of collection for our free service, with the collection now running for seven weeks, to meet demand.
The at-call service also increased over the past 12 months, with demand for this service more than doubling over the previous year.
During Metropolitan Melbourne’s COVID-19 Stage 4 restrictions, the Monash Waste Transfer Station was closed to the public. As a result, the fees for the At call Hard Waste Collection were temporarily reduced to provide residents an alternative waste disposal method during this period when many Melbournians took the opportunity to clean-up and do DIY projects around their homes.
Q) What advice does Monash have for ratepayers who want to use Monash's hard-rubbish pick up services?
This service is open to all residents in Monash, not just ratepayers.
We encourage them to make sure they read the information available on our website or the waste calendar delivered to all residents, that the items they are putting out are materials that are able to be collected, that they meet the 4 cubic metre limit and that items are placed appropriately on the nature strip and do not impede the footpath or roadway.
If booking an additional service to the free one, that they make sure they put out items for collection on the appropriate collection days (Wednesdays and Thursdays) and that it meets the 2 cubic metre requirement.
Q) What happens to the hard rubbish and are there better alternatives ratepayers should explore?
Depending on the material, it is either sent to landfill or recycled. Recycled items include metal, E-Waste, green waste and mattresses.
The Monash Waste Transfer Station, at 380 Ferntree Gully Road Notting Hill, is open from 7:30am-3pm, 7 days a week. The Transfer Station is a better option for some recyclable materials, such as cardboard, which is accepted for free and therefore does not contribute to the 2 cubic metre booking limit. Some more obscure items, such as x-ray films, polystyrene (small fees apply) and printer cartridges can also be recycled at the Transfer Station.
