Tamil Language Excellence Awards Celebrated in Melbourne

A veena recital at the event

The Australian Tamil Literary and Arts Society (ATLAS) has been organising a special event in recent years to recognise and honour students in the state of Victoria who have achieved outstanding results in the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) examination in the Tamil language, which serves as the university entrance qualification in the state.

The award ceremony to honour students who excelled in the 2025 VCE Tamil Language examination was held with great success on Monday, 9 March 2026, at Clayton Hall in Victoria. During the ceremony, awards were presented to the students who achieved the highest marks in Tamil, and the teachers who guided and taught these students were also recognised and honoured for their dedicated efforts.

Founded in Melbourne 22 years ago, the Australian Tamil Literary and Arts Society has been actively organising literary festivals, writers’ forums, author recognition events, book launches, and literary discussions across several states in Australia. These initiatives have played a significant role in promoting Tamil literature and cultural engagement within the community.

Since 2019, the Society has also been recognising Sri Lankan writers by awarding an annual prize of Rs. 50,000 along with a certificate in four categories: short story collections, novels, poetry, and essays. The purpose of this initiative is to encourage and honour Sri Lankan writers while also providing them with an international platform to showcase their creative works.

The main objective of honouring students who excel in the VCE Tamil Language examination in Victoria is to encourage more students to take Tamil as an academic subject. At the same time, the initiative aims to create awareness among students and parents about the importance of learning Tamil and to acknowledge their contributions towards the growth and preservation of the language.
