Monash Council will cease providing in-home aged care services by 30 June 2027, in response to major national aged care reforms introduced last year.

The new system gives older people greater choice and flexibility, with a strong focus on specialist providers who can deliver a full range of services as care needs change.

Monash Mayor, Cr Stuart James said Council has determined it is not best placed to meet the new requirement to provide a fuller range of services that scale up as clients’ needs increase.

“This decision was about making sure our community can access the most appropriate, flexible and comprehensive care available under the new system,” Cr James said.

“Monash is well positioned for this transition, with a strong mix of not-for-profit and private aged care providers already operating locally and capable of delivering the full range of services required under the new system.

There is no immediate impact for clients. Services will continue as usual, with Council supporting a smooth transition when new providers are appointed by the Australian Government.

“We want to reassure our community that nothing changes right now. We understand change can be unsettling, which is why we’ve taken the time to consult, plan carefully and focus on what’s best for older residents over the long term,” Cr James said.

“When the time comes, we will help clients choose providers who can meet their needs now and into the future.

Council also acknowledged its aged care workforce and contribution of volunteers.

“Our staff and volunteers are highly valued. We are confident that staff who wish to continue working in aged care will be highly sought after by the new providers,” Cr James said.

While Council will step back from direct service delivery, it remains committed to supporting older residents through advocacy, partnerships, information services and community programs.

“Our focus remains firmly on the wellbeing of older people in Monash,” Cr James said. “We will continue to play an important role in helping our community stay connected, informed and supported.”
