Rainwater Tanks
Rainwater tanks are common in Australia due to our climate. No specific planning permit is required for rainwater tanks up to 4,500 litres when installed to residential properties, except for areas covered by the Heritage Overlay.
The installation of a water tank does not require a building permit unless its forms part of new building work that is being undertaken under a valid building permit.
The owner must ensure any water overflow from the tank is directed to the stormwater system (legal point of discharge) within the property.
