Media response - sporting ground allocation

Published on 02 September 2025

Enquiry from the Herald Sun

  1. I believe Monash has told its clubs that it needs to be off  grounds by the second Saturday of March. What led the council to make that decision?
  2. Have clubs accepted the decision?
  3. Does it apply for all cricket grounds or just turf grounds?

Response

Monash Council allocates sports grounds for a five month season, leaving March and September for essential works to prepare the grounds for the next season.
In recent years both winter and summer sports associations have extended their fixtures, leaving little time for season changeover.
Some cricket clubs with turf pitches have requested to be able to play until the end of March in the upcoming summer season. We are considering these requests to extend usage where circumstances allow.
