Oakleigh Cycleway
Oakleigh’s two‑way cycleway on Atkinson Street, between Dandenong Road and Oxford Street, opened in late 2025.
This safe, permanent route connects the Scotchmans Creek Trail to the Djerring Trail, making it easier to cycle through central Oakleigh and links up with cycling options across Melbourne.
Whether you’re heading to the shops, commuting, or enjoying a weekend ride, the cycleway offers a smoother, safer and more accessible journey.
For pedestrians, it creates a safe and accessible walking link into the Oakleigh business district.
New line markings help guide everyone using the space:
- Green markings indicate exclusive bike areas.
- Yellow markings show where cyclists and pedestrians share the path.
Several new priority crossings have also been installed. These are marked with a Give Way sign to remind vehicles to give way to cyclists and pedestrians.
Works still to come
While the cycleway is open, a few final works will continue:
- Street lighting upgrade: including three new lighting poles along Hanover Street. Nearby residents and businesses will receive an update after the summer school holidays.
- Landscaping: new plantings in the extended kerb areas on the east side of Atkinson Street at key side‑street intersections.
- Signalised intersection works: construction of the cycleway through the Atkinson Street, Hanover Street and Atherton Road traffic‑light intersections will be completed in 2026. Until then, signage will remind cyclists to share the path with pedestrians.
The extension of the cycleway north of Dandenong Road to connect to Scotchmans Creek Trail will be considered as part of a future Monash Council budget.
