The $7.5 million Atkinson Street multi-level car park in Oakleigh is an extension of an existing ground floor car park which created a 274-space car park, boosting parking by 195 spaces.
Council recognised the need for extra car parks in Oakleigh, especially during peak periods when existing parking was 100% occupied.
In a community survey, Monash residents nominated 'parking availability' as the top area they wanted Council to improve. With this car park extension, we are responding to the community's wishes.
The project involved:
Council commissioned Melbourne street artist Michael Fikaris to create murals throughout the upgraded car park to reflect Oakleigh's natural elements.
The murals on the ground level and level one feature a botanic theme of floral and botanical references from Australian, Indigenous and Mediterranean plant life. The concept of the botanical theme is intended to reflect the lush and bountiful environment that reflects the markets, gardens and foods which make Oakleigh the thriving suburb it is.
The large-scale mural project also engaged students from Sacred Heart Girls' College and Oakleigh Grammar, who worked with the artist to paint their designs on to pillars of the car park.
