Mini-roundabout

We’re installing mini-roundabouts at several crossroad intersections across Monash.

This crash prevention initiative is funded by the Victorian Government through the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program.

Why mini-roundabouts?

Crossroad intersections have a higher incidence of near misses and crashes when motorists fail to obey ‘Stop’ or ‘Give Way’ signs.

Mini-roundabouts help improve driver awareness and better highlight the crossroad. Vehicle speeds are also slower at mini-roundabouts.

At some intersections we will be installing traffic islands and road cushions, rather than mini-roundabouts, as the intersection offset layout makes right turns difficult with a mini-roundabout. A central island would require vehicles to mount part of it to complete the turn, which poses a safety risk to the operation of the intersection.

What are we doing?

Construction of mini-roundabouts includes:

  • Fully mountable central islands that allow access for emergency and waste collection vehicles
  • Painted islands, and signs on the approaches to roundabouts
  • Light coloured concrete for central islands to enhance visibility
  • New pram ramps to improve pedestrian access for people with disabilities.

Possible impacts during construction

  • Intersections will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the works.
  • Parking in the close vicinity of work areas will be affected.
  • Traffic management plans will be in place to safely detour vehicles and pedestrians around work areas throughout construction.
