Burwood Little Plant Detectives | From Rooftop Garden to Table

Little Plant Detectives is a small-group winter study tour where children explore a real rooftop garden, build observation and early science skills, create a personal take-home learning booklet, and enjoy a guided café lunch experience with Montessori edu

Many parents love taking children to gardens, parks or farms, but are not always sure what to explore together. What is this plant? How does it grow? How is it connected to the food we eat every day? And how can a simple outing become a meaningful learning experience?

That is why this winter, we are doing more than just “having a look around”.

Guided by experienced early childhood and primary educators, children will begin with familiar food from the table, then step into a real rooftop garden to observe growing environments, garden beds, leaf shapes and the small details that make plants come alive.

This is more than a nature outing.

Children will practise observing, comparing, questioning, sorting and recording — important foundations for future science learning. They will also build real vocabulary, details and experiences that support future writing and expression.

At the end of the experience, each child will take home a special study kit to continue exploring and extending their learning in everyday life.

Meaningful learning is not about how much adults explain. It is about helping children learn to look closely, ask questions, make connections and have something real to say.
