In late 2025, we asked how you want your hard waste collected. Based on your feedback, Council decided at its 27 January 2026 meeting to move to a booked hard waste collection service from 2027.

From 2027, Monash residents will have the flexibility to book 2 collections a year, at a time that best suits them.

There is no change this yearYour 2026 hard waste will still be collected on a set week, likely between July and September.

We will also delay implementing the kerbside glass recycling service until after the Victorian Government releases its statewide standards for the service.

What you told us

We heard from more than 2,600 people across an online survey, and 3 pop-ups at festivals and shopping centres, with interpreters present.

The majority (55%) preferred booked hard waste collections, with strong views on both sides:

  • Flexibility and convenience: People valued the ability to book collections when they need it, especially households with limited storage or changing needs.
  • Amenity and compliance: Many of those who preferred annual collection raised concerns about the potential for clutter and dumped rubbish with the booked service.
  • Equity and access: Some felt booked collections were fairer for renters. Others felt booked collections would disadvantage those less comfortable with technology.

How we are responding to your feedback

Your feedback will help inform how we implement the change and how we can set strong rules to protect local amenity:

  • We will clearly communicate put-out times as part of the roll out, set service standards for timely pick-up and incorporate robust enforcement.
  • To increase accessibility, we will include digital and phone options to book a collection.

Glass recycling

We will delay implementing the kerbside glass recycling service until after the Victorian Government releases its statewide standards for the service.

Waiting for the final standards ensures we deliver a compliant glass service without creating unnecessary costs or changes for residents. We will also continue to partner with other councils to advocate to the Victorian Government to delay or further consider the introduction of a mandatory glass recycling bin.

In the survey, 67.5% preferred the 80L bin, compared with 29.2% who preferred the 120L bin.

Among the 80L bin selectors, 30% cited low glass use. Preference for the 120L bin was mainly due to the 4-weekly collection schedule: 22% said they needed more room due to the 4 weeks between bins being emptied.
