Changes to aged care services: Frequently asked questions

What services does this affect?

This affects aged care services delivered in the home of older people and includes:

  • Help in the home (cleaning and household tasks)
  • Personal care
  • Meals
  • Allied health services
  • Home maintenance and small changes to your home
  • Respite care
  • Social support groups

Is Monash Council stopping aged care services now?

No. Nothing is changing right now. All services will continue as usual, and there will be plenty of notice and support before anything changes.

Why can’t Council just keep providing these services?

Under the new aged care system providers are expected to offer a wide range of services, from entry‑level support through to more complex care.

There are already many specialist not‑for‑profit and private aged care providers in Monash that meet these new requirements.

Has a final decision been made?

No final decision has been made yet. Council is currently gathering feedback from clients, families, carers, staff and partners.

What happens if Council decides not to continue providing aged care services?

If a decision is made not to continue after 30 June 2027:

  • Council will work closely with the Australian Government to support clients to move to new providers.
  • Clients will be supported to choose a provider that suits their needs and preferences.
  • Council will focus on making the transition smooth and well‑supported.

Will my services stop?

No. Your services will not stop. If a transition is required, Council will help ensure your services continue without interruption by supporting you to move to a new provider. You will still be eligible for all the services you receive now and you will not need to be reassessed.

Will I be able to choose my new provider?

Yes. A key part of the new aged care system is choice. You will be able to select the provider or providers that best meet your needs. Council will help you understand your options and, with your permission, share your details to support a smooth transition.

How will families and carers be involved?

Families and carers play an important role. Information will be available on Council’s website and they are encouraged to support clients in:

  • Understanding the changes
  • Considering provider options
  • Making informed choices about future care

What does this mean for Council staff and volunteers?

Council’s staff and volunteers are highly valued. Many staff skills are in strong demand, and we are confident that staff who wish to continue working in aged care will have opportunities with other providers.

If Council does not continue as a provider staff will be informed early and Council will meet all workplace obligations.

Volunteers will also be kept informed and supported throughout the process.
