Keep Victoria Beautiful’s Sustainable Cities Awards

Monash is in the running to be named the Keep Victoria Beautiful’s (KVB) Sustainable City of the Year.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony tonight (12 November) via YouTube, starting at 8pm.

KVB’s Sustainable Cities Awards recognises and celebrate positive actions taken by communities in urban areas to protect and enhance their local environments. 

There are several separate award categories - including Energy, Social Wellbeing and Waste - and a handful of Councils are also selected for the overall Sustainable City Award.

Monash has been named an overall finalist because Council and other community groups entered a minimum of three council projects in separate categories and three community projects in any category.

Monash joins other metropolitan Melbourne Councils - City of Bayside, City of Casey, City of Moonee Valley and City of Port Phillip as a finalist in the overall Sustainable City Award.

As part of the awards submission, Council put forward several projects that showcase the sustainability projects and education being done in the community.

Our Monash Youth Ambassadors (YABS) are also in the running for the Social Well-being Award – a category celebrating projects that contribute to an accessible community with resilient, healthy and happy people for its #MYAction2020 campaign.

Last year Monash Youth Services (MYS) and YABS consulted with more than 2500 young people aged 10-25 to find out what matters to them. The results showed that local young people are most concerned about the environment, mental health, feeling stress, education and safety.
