Media response - separate waste charge

Published on 02 October 2025

Enquiry from Eastern Melburnian

In response to our media release announcing that a separate waste charge will be introduced in Monash from July 2026.
  • What is the litre volume of a current large bin?
  • Is council already offering 80-litre bins, or some other volume of smaller bin?
  • If you get a smaller bin, do you currently pay the same waste levy under 2025/26's budget/charges as everyone else with larger bins?
  • Would the charge also then absorb the costs needed to purchase a certain number of 80L bins and extra lids?
  • Would consultation occur with all households prior to see who would want to get smaller bin/s before they go ahead with rolling out the whole scheme?

Response

The standard bin sizes for Monash residents are 120l for landfill and 240l for recycling and green waste. Residents can request a larger 240l landfill bin for $417 a year, which is added to their rates notice. An additional 240l recycling bin is $73.10 and green waste is $173.20.

During consultation, we heard that it is unfair that smaller households and people who are doing their best to reduce their waste are paying the same as others.

In response to this, we are investigating the option of introducing a smaller bin at a cheaper price point.
