Statement from the Mayor - Bondi terror attack
Published on 16 December 2025
In response to the terror attack in Bondi on Sunday, Monash Council’s Glen Waverley Civic Centre is lit up to honour the victims, and our flags are flying at half-mast. We have also joined the Glen Eira, Port Phillip and other councils across Victoria is co-signing a statement in response to the tragic mass shooting.
Monash Mayor, Cr Stuart James, made the below statement to open our Council meeting on Tuesday 16 December.
Mayor's statement - Tuesday 16 December
Tonight, our building is bathed in light as we honour the victims of the horrific terror attack in Bondi and pay thanks to the first responders, hospital staff and ordinary community members that attended to the many wounded.
We stand united in grief and solidarity for the victims, those still recovering, those that witnessed what no-one should ever have to see, and the broader Waverley community.
Hate has no place in Australia.
The attack on the Jewish community in Bondi is an attack on all Australians.
We condemn antisemitism, violence and hate in all its forms.
To our Jewish community, we stand with you. You have the right to worship, to study, to live and to work in peace and safety.
Many people in Monash will be feeling this deeply — especially those with loved ones in Sydney. You are not alone.
It is also notable that the Bondi hero, Ahmed Al Ahmed, is a Muslim Australian. His bravery in protecting others at a Jewish gathering is a powerful reminder that compassion and courage transcend faith and background.
I have reached out to the Mayors of Glen Eira and Port Phillip, whose municipalities house some of the largest Jewish communities in our State, and have offered them the full support of our organisation and community.
If you’re wondering how you can help, the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is encouraging eligible people to donate blood.
In Monash, we are determined to ensure our city is a place of safety, respect, and belonging for all.
We will continue to work every day to bring people together, promote social cohesion, and build inclusive communities.
Together, we grieve.
Together, we heal.
Together, we stand united against hate.
